DDoS Attack Against AO3: Correcting Misinformation

Normally I don’t make any posts like this, but I have an interest in cybersecurity and sadly I’ve seen people are being really ignorant about this recent DDoS attack against the site AO3 (Archive of Our Own), so I thought I’d remind people of a few things:

  1. Anonymous Sudan appears to have no actual link to Sudan at all, or to any previous hacktivist groups that once operated there. This masquerade is probably based in anti-immigration and other racist sentiments, and utilizing those sentiments in other people to scare people and set up Muslims and Sudanese people as a target. This should be obvious from the language used in their note, but this was already known prior to this particular attack.
  2. This so-called Anonymous Sudan has actually been very active recently—remember that they claimed to attack Reddit, Flickr, Riot Games, a huge number of Microsoft web portals like OneDrive and Outlook, etc. before AO3, so AO3 was totally a logical target for them since they’ve gone after smaller entities before. DDoS attacks like this are easy for any script kiddie to set up, so it’s not weird that they’d go for a smaller target like this.
  3. Honestly this group of posers probably just wants money, everybody. They sent AO3 a ransom note asking for Bitcoin (and just in case people don’t know, do not pay a ransom if at all possible if this ever happens to you).

My advice to people who’ve noticed this attack is two-fold: calm down since this is part of a larger pattern that has literally resulted in basically no loss for the end-user of any of the sites, and… I don’t really know a better way to put this, but don’t believe everything you read. A religiously-motivated hate group wouldn’t use terms like “LGBTQ+” and “smuts,” and it’s so blatantly obvious that the timing of every single one of these attacks is being used to smear Muslims and Sudanese people if you think about current events for like. One second. And if you look up Anonymous Sudan, you’ll see their string of attacks and how all experts know that they have nothing to do with Sudan at all. Even AO3 itself told everybody that the group is lying about their motivations… though I think I’d go further than that personally because even their name itself is almost certainly a total sham.

To be clear: this post isn’t targeted at anyone in particular. I’ve just seen a lot of people falling for this overall or not realizing this is part of a pattern, and I also wanted to remind everyone that this isn’t anything to be concerned about. What is something to be concerned about is not doing research or thinking critically and then unwittingly spreading racist ideas.

Studied at a cafe today instead of the library. Had a slow start but am soon done with my sustainable manufacturing notes. Moving on to production systems in a day or so. Going to write my exams, and am going to do it confidently!

A group presenting themselves as a collective of religiously and politically motivated hackers has claimed responsibility for the attack. Experts do not believe they are honest about their motivation, so we urge caution in believing any reasoning they provide for targeting AO3. — AO3 Status (@AO3_Status) July 10, 2023ALT

Fandom Olds know this, but believing the statements of people trying to fuck with any fandom site just leads to bad faith drama and later looking silly.

Also, people can just go online and say shit. Anyone can claim to be behind it, and whoever gets the most twitter engagement will be the ones who gets listened to and they might not even know what an AO3 is.

legit as someone who works in tech i cannot IMAGINE being one of the tech volunteers for ao3 and combatting this ddos attack FOR FREE. ALL. DAY. LONG. definitely donating to ao3 this year when this is all over and the site is back up and running.

A little explainer on what happened with AO3:

Basically, someone or a group of someones decided to levy a DDoS attack. What this means is that they created a botnet (network of devices controlled by a bot, usually run in the background of an unsecured IoT device or computer being used for other things. Think data mining) to flood the servers with false requests for service.

What this does mean: AO3 might go back down, if the attack is relaunched. These types of attacks are usually used against businesses where traffic = money, thereby costing a company money. This isn’t really an issue here since AO3 is entirely donation and volunteer based.

What this doesn’t mean: stories, bookmarks, etc will be deleted and your anonymously published works will be linked back to you. No vulnerable points are breached during this process, so unless this group ends up doing something else, no data breaches will happen. You are safe, your content is safe.

  • you will in fact continue to have acne past the age of twenty
  • you will eventually hit a point where you start to feel icky inside if you go too long without eating some sort of vegetables
  • depending on your current level of athleticism/physical activity as well as the kind of activities you did as a kid/teenager, your joints may start acting whack in your twenties, despite what everyone says about that not happening until middle age
  • eventually you will reach a point where you wonder how you were able to stay up until 3am nearly every night and be perfectly fine the next day (and this moment will come much younger than you expect)
  • it is much harder to meet new people after you’re done with school than sitcoms would have you believe
  • don’t let society tell you shit: it is perfectly acceptable to live with your parents after you graduate, there’s no need to be broke and miserable just so you can have some misguided attempt at independence straight out of school
  • aging in general will catch up to you much sooner than you think. you’ll notice your first grey hairs ~25. crows feet appear when you smile ~30. aging is a slow and gradual process that’s happening throughout your life, including your 20’s. it’s not like an Old switch flips when you turn 40, any more than a Puberty switch flipped when you turned 13.
  • same thing with not being Cool anymore. you’ll be vibing one day and suddenly media is saying your favorite style of jeans or hairstyle “date” you. (on the up side, you probably won’t care about that kind of thing anymore.)
  • taking care of your body and your home is Relentless. nobody will make you do chores or eat your veggies. it can wear at you if you let it. setting and keeping good habits lessens the strain.
  • measuring success is harder as an adult. in school you get graded most days, sports are measured in points. feedback at work regarding performance will be largely arbitrary. nobody can tell you if you’re on the right track to raise children into well-adjusted adults (though there’s plenty of conflicting advise out there). are you happy? how happy?
  • outside of some obscene luck, you probably won’t build the life you want at the speed you want. that’s normal.
  • you don’t have to stop liking “kid” stuff when you grow up. if you can still like ice cream or sports, you can also still like disney or nerf guns.
  • you’re gonna have a favorite burner on your stove.
  • You will start to genuinely enjoy those ‘boring’ gifts like socks or hand soap (because now you don’t have to buy socks or hand soap)
  • It’s not the bending over for an extended period of time that’s gonna get you, it’s the standing back up after that’s gonna throw out your back. Take your time

STRETCH. Just do it. It will save, do you a world of good when stuff starts feeling stiff/breaking down.
